Having lived his life in the public eye ever since he rose to stardom as a teen idol in 80’s hit series 21 Jump Street, it’s hard to imagine there’s anything still left unknown about Hollywood megastar Johnny Depp. But some interesting facts about the 54-year-old actor have managed to slip under the radar. He owns an island in the Bahamas
Johnny paid $3.6million (£2.8million) to purchase Little Hay’s Pond Cay Island in the Bahamas in 2004. The island has six beaches named after his children, Lily-Rose and John, known as Jack, and his former partner Vanessa Paradis, as well as a palm-tree, lined lagoon and solar-powered houses. In 2015, he and his then-new partner, Amber Heard, tied the knot on the island in front of just 24 people, following a legal ceremony in Los Angeles.
He has recorded with British rock sensation Oasis
Johnny played slide guitar on their song Fade In-Out, from their hit album Be Here Now, released in 1997, which went on to become the fastest-selling album in British chart history. According to MTV, Oasis leader Noel Gallagher’s then-wife was a friend of Johnny’s then-girlfriend, Kate Moss, and they all came together at the same time on the Caribbean island of Mustique. Johnny was all ready to help out Noel, who did not play slide guitar himself but needed it for a song he had written.
His head teacher encouraged him to be a rockstar
Before he was a pirate, he was a rocker. Johnny dropped out of high school a year after his parents’ divorce to follow his dreams of being a rockstar. He tried to go back to school two weeks later under the orders of his parents, but was refused by his head teacher who told him to follow his dreams and to be a musician – how inspiring!
He is going to Glastonbury!
Glastonbury festival is introducing cinema this year with a new Cineramageddon tent, and Johnny, as a guest of honor, will be joining festival junkies to present his three favorite films, The Libertine, Withnail & I, and Dead Man, and to speak about what the films mean to him with director Julian Temple. The film choices will then be screened throughout the night for fans to enjoy.
His first marriage was to make-up artist Lori Anne Allison in 1983
Before there was Amber Heard and Vanessa Paradis, there was Lori Anne Allison. Johnny married the make-up artist, also the sister of his former band’s bass player, when he was just 20 years old. At the time he was working odd jobs trying to support his new wife until she eventually got him his first break by introducing him to Nicolas Cage. They parted ways in 1985 following two years of marriage. The pair is still said to be close, with Lori coming to Johnny’s defense following accusations of abuse by Amber Heard after the collapse of their marriage last year. According to TMZ, Lori never believed that Johnny was capable of abuse against Amber. Lori claimed that Johnny was a “soft person” who treated his pets like his children.
He has coulrophobia
That is, a fear of clowns. “I have this fear of clowns” the actor has previously revealed. “So I think that if I surround myself with them it will ward off all evil!”
His daughter was hospitalised in 2007 for an E.coli infection which led to temporary lung failure
Lily-Rose Depp is now well-known in her own right for her high-flying modelling career- she is a Chanel muse after all- but back in 2007, Johnny revealed on the Graham Norton Show he went through “the darkest period in my life” when his daughter was admitted to Great Ormond Street hospital for nine days for kidney failure caused by E.coli poisoning. At the time, Johnny dressed himself up as Captain Jack Sparrow to cheer up the children at the hospital, admitting on the show: “For me, it’s a gift. They give me the gift.”
Nicolas Cage got him into acting
He was introduced to Nicolas Cage through his first wife, Lori Anne Allison, and Nicolas was reportedly the one to tell Johnny to pursue acting as a career. Nicolas also arranged for him to meet with his agent, which eventually landed Johnny his first role in A Nightmare on Elm Street.
He’s never won an Oscar
Despite being a three-time Academy Award nominee and winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor, coupled with the Screen Actor’s Guild Award for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role, Johnny Depp has never once won an Oscar. He’s the 20th cousin of Queen Elizabeth II
He’s already considered Hollywood royalty, but it turns out that 54-year-old actor is royalty in real life too, being the 20th cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. According to Nick Barratt, a genealogist for the BBC show Who Do You Think You Are, Johnny shares a connection with the Queen through a mutual great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather.
He Was Officially Inducted Into the Cherokee Tribe
Johnny Depp is extremely proud of his Native American heritage, and he actually has a Native American symbol tattooed on his right arm. In 2012, he was formally inducted into the Cherokee tribe, and he spoke personally with the Navajo triple while filming The Lone Ranger to ensure the crew had permission to use their land.
He Once Worked a Telemarketing Job Selling Pens
Before he made his debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Johnny Depp was just a musician living out of a car. During this time in his life, he would accept any weird job he could grab, one of which was a telemarketing ten salesman. He said, “I marketedpens-on the phone. But the beauty of the gig was that you had to call these strangers and say, ‘Hi, how ya doing?’ You made up a name, like, ‘Hey, it’s Edward Quartermaine from California. You’re eligible to receive this grand-father clock or a trip to Tahiti….’I actually think that was the first experience I had with acting.”
At One Point He Co-Owned The Infamous Viper RoomAnthony Fox owned a nightclub in West Hollywood, which was the former location of gangster Bugsy Siegel’s club “The Melody Room.” So, Johnny and Chuck E. Weiss made a deal with Fox and took 51% ownership and reopened the place as the “The Viper Room” on August 14th, 1993. The opening night of the club was a benefit for the Starlight Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to terminally ill children. Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers were headlining, and the attendees included Quentin Tarantino, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Tim Burton. The club soon became a hot club known throughout L.A. but it was also a place of tragedy. Actor River Phoenix collapsed and died from a drug overdose right outside of the club.
He’s A High School Dropout
After he got his first guitar at 12, he decided to drop out a few years later at 15. It’s reported that when he attempted to re-enroll, the principal actually encouraged him to stay out so he could focus on his music career.
He Has A Fossil Named After Him
A British scientist David Egg found a 505 million-year-old fossil that reminded him of Depp’s character, Edward Scissorhands. The animal had large scissor-like claws and could have been an ancestor of scorpions and lobsters. He honored the actor by naming the fossil Kooteninchela deppi, which the genus name Kootenichela includes the reference to the film, since ‘chela’ is latin for claws or scissors and deppi for Depp.
He’s Never Won an Oscar
Johnny Depp is by far one of Hollywood’s. biggest icons, and he is known for his range of talents. He’s been nominated countless times for Academy awards, BAFTA awards, Golden Globe Awards and Teen and People’s Choice Awards. He Doesn’t Like Watching His Own Films
Depp has often confirmed in interviews that he dislikes watching his own films. He’s even gone as far to say that he doesn’t really watch any films these days, but refused to explain why. Now, seeing as his daughter, Lily Rose Depp, is a model and is often photographed, this point needs clarification. This is in reference to when Depp is out and about running errands or attending awards/screenings, or is approached by fans. He’s usually willing to sign an autograph and have a photo taken with his fans, but he has a strict rule that any photography cannot include his children.
